Rhune Bervoet from Ghent (Belgium) has just arrived in Tanzania. She is 21 years old and a photography master student at Kask & Conservatory based in Ghent.
Rhune will spend one month in different locations in Tanzania and in this blog she will share her impressions with images and stories.
She will stay at the Houses of Hope, which are places that have been started with the support of Child-Help. These Houses take care of parents and their children who have Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus before, during and after their stay at the hospital. Here they are being provided with food, a place to sleep, and psychological understanding of each other and the workers.
Rhune: “Here I am documenting how the impact of this disability and the poverty influences the involved people and how Child-Help does everything they can to make the unbearable, bearable.
The importance of photography to me is more to be active with the people than the ‘simple’ act of looking. By living with these people and witnessing the situations I get a better understanding of their lives and based on that I make images. My aim is to spread awareness about the things we usually shut our ears and close our eyes for because they’re not happening in our eyesight, but the stories have to be heard.”
